This time we have a new composition/arrangement from me called “Spring in the Step” (not in the steppes).
It’s nearly a samba, with a quasi waltz in the middle, which also has a Brazilian flavour and is more funky than waltzy.
It features one of the sax players , pVR, who also struts his stuff on the flute in the waltzy bit.
Sometimes I like to think of this band as the 17 Musketeers, all for one and one for all, even free for all sometimes.
BUT
I’m slowly getting repertoire amassed to feature each of the individual talents of my gifted colleagues.
I ask them what sort of thing they like as a vehicle for their solos, more chords, less chords, simple structure, more complex etc.
So we’ll feature the sax/flute, guitar on another piece, there’ll be tuba bits, trombone bits, trumpet bits, piano bits and tunes where everyone gets a go.
The rhythm section are on the go most of the time but every now and then they get a space when the rest of the band shuts up and you can actually hear the bass alone, or the drums takes a blistering break, or maybe a subtle little shimmy.
Apart from that, there’s food available, bar for drinks, CDs of the band (cash))
